NOW WE FALL HORIZONTALLY

Exhibition Project at Midway Artist Studios

Studio #403

Curators: Anna Markowska, Tomasz Opania, Milan Kohout

September 13 - 15, 2024

Reception: September 13, 4pm-8pm.

Embracing the Horizontal Fall is the title of a three-day festival at Midway Artist Studios in Boston, scheduled for September 13-15, 2024, at the invitation of artist and performer Milan Kohout. Anna Markowska curates the event from the University of Wrocław and Tomasz Opania from the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław. The festival will include video performance screenings, documentation displays, live performances, public space interventions, and art installations that resonate with the theme suggested by the title. The event is organized by the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław and the Culture and Art Centre in Wroclaw. The exhibition is funded by the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław and from the budget of the Self-Government of the Lower Silesian Region

The exhibition will showcase the works of artists who have previously collaborated and are associated with the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, Poland. Thanks to this established group of emerging and seasoned artists, the exhibition facilitates diverse perspectives that can resonate with audiences. Embracing the Horizontal Fall considers art a common language that no one is fluent in. Therefore, everyone is learning it from one another, while rejoicing in shared experience. This belief in the agency of art is one of the main messages of the show.

The Museum of Scenographic Design (MOSDO), in collaboration with Boston Lyric Opera (BLO)Illuminus & OPERA America invite you to come and enjoy our new exhibition at Midway Artist Studios, in Fort Point, Boston.

Beneath the experience of a live performance is a world of enriched artistry that often remains unrevealed. Our new exhibition,‘SCENOGRAPHERS’ delves into the intricate and captivating worlds of renowned designers John Conklin and Franco Colavecchia, peeling back the layers of their creative processes, offering a rare glimpse into the foundation of scenographic design and artistry.

Visitors are invited to explore an immersive array of their original drawings, renderings, models, notes, and documents. These elements are the essential ingredients that breathe life into the grand visions we witness on stage. Interactive projections and animations vividly unfold the journey of creation, offering an immersive experience that brings the process to life.

Conklin and Colavecchia each have a long and deep history with opera, with their innovative designs transforming the visual landscapes of countless productions. Having been instrumental in shaping each of their own ways stories are told on the operatic stage, blending traditional elements with modern techniques to create immersive, evocative environments. Both have collaborated with leading opera companies around the world including the Metropolitan Opera; the New York City Opera; Boston Lyric Opera, Glimmerglass Opera; Opera Theatre of St. Louis; Santa Fe Opera; Seattle Opera; and the opera companies of Houston, Dallas, San Diego and LA Opera. They have each left an indelible mark on the art form and inspired generations of designers to push the boundaries of scenography. Their contributions have not only elevated the visual experience of opera but have also deepened the emotional impact of the performances, making them integral figures in the evolution of operatic design.

The exhibition is presented in at Midway Artist Studios & Boston Lyric Opera; Gallery, Opera & Community Studios, thru September 22nd, 2024, 9am to 7pm.

Reception: September 28, 8:30pm-9:30pm.

"Historical TRUTH" is a dramaturgical exhibition that offers an historical travelogue of the play Truth: a biofictional choreopoem. New plays can have a journey of development that spans a few months to many years. Truth: a biofictional choreopoem was conceived from unique and fragmented stories and historical data about black female abolitionists gathered over a year at unheralded sites of conscience as well as more prominent and established historical institutions. This exhibit explores the ways that history becomes a biofictional choreopoem that amplifies black female resistance to slavery.

As part of the exhibition, the Bristol Historical and Preservation Society has loaned "Historical TRUTH" a portion of the 56-foot timeline of U.S. slavery used to offer interpretive analysis of the unique role Bristol, RI played in the slave trade.

In Taylor Coughlin's SEA(e)SCAPES, the essence of identity, freedom, strength, and empowerment is captured through a stunning collection of oil paintings and ink drawings. Inspired by her personal journey of self-discovery and ambition, Coughlin delves into the depths of light, color, and texture to convey the complexities of her experiences as a young woman breaking free from the confines of a stagnant existence. Each piece in the series is a reflection of her courageous voyage towards new horizons, symbolized by the vast ocean and rugged coastlines. Through the imagery of ships as vessels of escape and the resilience of flowers and foliage amidst rocky terrains, Coughlin's work embodies the transformative power of growth and the unwavering pursuit of a brighter tomorrow. “Making Do”

the legacy and art of Susan Thompson

Midway Gallery

June 6, 2024 – August 5, 2024

Opening Reception: June 14, 5-8pm

Art Statement

“These deeply human and richly textured fiber art quilts by Boston based textile and multi-media artist and educator Susan Thompson celebrate deepconnections between family, community, spirituality and other shared cultural experience”

Kevin Wery – Bunker Hill Community college

The pieces that are on exhibition at the Midway Gallery are a sampling of art works created by artist, Susan Thompson from 2000 through the present. Art quilts and mixed media are the focus of her art practice. She transforms fabric by dying, drawing, waxing, sculpting, printing, embellishing and sewing. She incorporates encaustic painting on various surfaces to create sculptural forms.

A recurrent theme in her work has been acknowledgement, recognition and love of the Ancestors who extend back into the beginning of humankind. She states that it is the call of the ancestors that compel her to create art. That is the reason so many of her artworks are dedicated to them.

For Susan, art is her means of reaching out and sharing her gifts with others. Through fabric, color and texture, she creates designs, tell stories and strives to communicate the truth as she knows it. Art enables her to express the deep and abiding love which fires life.

Small works, figurative and non-figurative, are an organic part of the collection of my artworks. This collection has pieces in various mediums, as well as of various sizes - from very large to very small – made during decades of art-making. To be noted that a significant part of these decades has been given to making a number of Interactive Collaborative Art Projects for Multiple Participants, as well as installations.

The following Statement is applicable to all my works, including ‘’small works’’.

From shapeless matter are coming out shapes
Tender shadows – from blinding light
Color, affectionately, envelopes every form
Observation is in the eyes of the beholder – called forth from that very matter

This exhibition is a collection of sustainable photographs and natural wood sculptures by Mona Miri. It is a collection of work representing the environmental landscapes and sustainability work of Mona Miri, throughout her career as a Sustainability Fine Art Photographer. The work is to represent the constant change of the landscape and our Earth, the delicate state it is in. Even in the midst of a polluted and industrial landscape there is still beauty to be seen. The before and after of the remediation of the Landfill park is relieving to view, yet the contrast of the Ice from a century past is hard to observe. With the help of Arbor Day Foundation there will be trees planted for the show as well as the off set of carbon emissions footprints for the production. This has been one of Mona’s Miri’s signature sustainability factors in the production of her work since 2009, as well as the renewable resource of material used, and the importance of the subject matter, our delicate planet.

There will be an opportunity to sign up to plant trees and with every purchase a tree will be planted on the person’s behalf.

Alchemical is an exhibition of paintings by artist Timothy Kadish. The works narrate a story of creation, a story without time. Kadish paints rich tapestries of varied media inspired by a marriage of art, science, and myth. Through prominent and interrelating iconographies, marks and symbols, the paintings yield a familiar literacy, yet seemingly unattainable translation.
